Guided by years of field experience and a deep passion for avian life, this tour will take you into prime birding habitats at just the right time—when the forest awakens and the treetops sing. From vibrant calls of Cuckoos to shy Wren Babblers and, of course, the dazzling trogons, this tour is designed for both seasoned birders and curious nature lovers alike.

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you’ll be greeted with a warm traditional welcome by a representative from Trogon Travels. After clearing formalities, we’ll enjoy a relaxed coffee break in the charming town of Paro, taking in the crisp mountain air and scenic surroundings.
Later in the day, we’ll begin our first birding excursion along the Pa Chu River, a prime spot for early highlights. With luck, we may spot the striking Ibisbill, Hodgson’s Redstart, plumbeous water redstarts, and a variety of sandpipers and wagtails along the riverbanks.
As the afternoon light fades, we’ll make the scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city, nestled in a high-altitude valley. After check-in at our hotel, enjoy a welcome dinner and briefing on the exciting days ahead.
Target birds: Ibisbill, Hodgson’s Redstart, sandpipers, wagtails, and more.
After an early breakfast, we depart Thimphu and ascend to the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m), known for its panoramic Himalayan views and rich birdlife. Here, we’ll begin our morning birding session, scanning for high-altitude specialties like the elusive Great Parrotbill, the vibrant Fire-tailed Myzornis, and colorful sunbirds in the rhododendron and bamboo thickets.
We then descend into the lush forests of Lampelri Botanical Park, a hotspot for mid-elevation species. This area is also one of our best chances to encounter the stunning Ward’s Trogon, Bhutan’s avian jewel. We’ll take our time birding along the trail, listening for calls and watching the canopy carefully.
A lunch will be served en route to maximize birding opportunities. In the afternoon, we revisit trogon habitat to improve chances of sightings before continuing our journey to Punakha, where we’ll check in for an overnight stay.
Target birds: Ward’s Trogon, Great Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis and sunbird.
This morning, we drive north along the scenic Mo Chu (Female River), heading deep into the lush forests of Tashithang, a rich birding zone at the edge of Jigme Dorji National Park. As we follow the river’s path, keep an eye out for the elusive Smooth-coated Otter and the critically endangered White-bellied Heron, one of the rarest herons in the world.
Further along the route, the dense undergrowth and riverine forest offer opportunities to spot Pallas’s Fish Eagle, as well as skulking forest gems like Tesia, Wren-Babblers, and other secretive species that thrive in this habitat.
We’ll enjoy a packed lunch en route, taking time to pause at productive birding spots. By late afternoon, we return to Punakha, where you can relax at the hotel after a rewarding day of riverside birding.
Target species: White-bellied Heron, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Tesia, Wren-Babblers, Smooth-coated Otter.
Today’s journey takes us eastward toward Nobding, with birding stops along the braided floodplains of the Puna Tsang Chu River, an important habitat for a wide variety of water birds. This dynamic river basin has produced numerous surprising records in recent years, adding several new species to Bhutan’s national bird list.
From the lowlands, we follow the Dangchu River upstream into pristine mid-elevation forest. These dense, moss-laden woods are excellent for colorful and elusive species like the Golden-throated Barbet, Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler, and the rare Yellow-rumped Honeyguide. The Fire-capped Tit and Asian Emerald Cuckoo also frequent this area, making for a richly rewarding birding day.
We reach Nobding by late afternoon and check into our accommodation for the night, surrounded by cool pine forests and the sounds of the Himalayan wilderness.
Target species: Wards trogon, Water birds, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, Fire-capped Tit, Emerald Cuckoo, Scimitar Babbler.
We start early with a scenic drive to the Pelela Pass, one of Bhutan’s highest points and a hotspot for spectacular high-altitude birds. Here, we’ll search for the elusive and striking Satyr Tragopan and the brilliantly colored Himalayan Monal—both prized sightings for any birder. Along the way, keep an eye out for other alpine specialists that thrive in this cool, rugged environment.
In the afternoon, we descend to the serene Phobjikha Valley, a wide glacial valley known for its unique ecosystem and as a wintering ground for the endangered Black-necked Crane. This peaceful valley also offers excellent birding opportunities with its mix of wetlands, forests, and grasslands.
After settling in, enjoy the breathtaking views and evening bird calls as we prepare for the adventures ahead.
Target species: Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal, Black-necked Crane, alpine birds.
This morning, we’ll revisit the Nobding area for a final birding session, exploring its rich habitats for any species we may have missed earlier. Enjoy the peaceful forest trails and listen for calls of elusive birds as the morning unfolds.
Afterward, we’ll begin our scenic drive back to Paro, taking in the beautiful Himalayan landscapes along the way. Upon arrival, there will be some free time to explore the town or relax before the tour’s conclusion.
In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner and share stories from your unforgettable Bhutan birding adventure.

Today, we venture to Chelela Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable pass at over 3,988 meters (13,080 feet). This stunning location offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks and is renowned for its rich birdlife.
At this altitude, we’ll search for rare and specialized species such as Blood Pheasant, Kalij Pheasant Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Snow Pigeon, and various highland songbirds. The alpine meadows and rhododendron forests surrounding the pass are alive with color and bird activity during the right season.
After a rewarding day of birding amidst some of Bhutan’s most spectacular landscapes, we’ll return to Paro for a restful evening.

Today we embark on a highlight of any Bhutan journey—a hike to the iconic Tigers Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), perched dramatically on a cliffside 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor. Along the trail, enjoy opportunities to spot forest birds such as Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Green Shrike Babbler, Wallcreeper and Alpine Accentor, while soaking in the breathtaking mountain scenery.
The monastery itself offers spiritual serenity and stunning views. After a peaceful visit, we descend back to Paro town where you can relax or explore local markets.
This day combines cultural wonder with excellent birding, making it a perfect finale to your Bhutan adventure.
